The Idler Wheel…

Back in November 2011, New Yorker Fiona Apple grumbled that this album had “been done for a fucking year.” Whatever stalled in its release, it has been worth the wait. Packing robust, bare-boned, often off-piste piano, double bass and percussion-loop arrangements, it’s a hyper-vivid and intensely musical affair that takes us deep inside Apple’s skittish, fretful mind. Her multi-timbred voice is a compelling instrument throughout; heart-raw and (hopefully) cathartic on Regret, and an agile, multi-tracked thing on playful closer Hot Knife. Read as a love oracle The Idler Wheel… does not bode well, however, its players grappling with tearful dinner dates (Valentine), and confused pleas for space (Left Alone). “Nothing wrong when / A song ends in / A minor key,” sings Apple sadly on stand-out track Werewolf."

What if we treated…
The things that people believe are ok to say to person dealing with a mental illness never ceases to amaze and sicken me. The, “It’s not a real sickness” mentality continues to feed into the stigmatization of mental/behavioral health. Before you tell someone to “suck it up” or “get over it” stop long enough to consider what you’d tell them if they were dealing with any other emergent medical condition.
